The typolog ies of the villagers and their lifestyles should be reflected through typologies of the settlements in the design.
Study of current design is crucial to know actual need of re-design.
The orient ation of the settlement should respond to t he sun path.

Tropical cyclones in the eastern coast of India repeatedly leaves a havoc with immense loss of lives, homes, properties, infrastructure, flora &
fauna and much more. The coast is four t imes more likely than the western ghats each year for cyclones and of which 2 to 3 are categorized as
severe. Of this lies a lesser known settlement Kapateswar, situated in Puri sadar, adjacent to the river Bhargavi, rich in culture and heritage
ever so threatened by the changing climate and their kachha houses.
It also focuses on the occupational req uirements upholding the essence of community in the village. The project proposes linear row housings
with central community spaces where their socio-cultural and economic considerations are pri oritized in addition to its capacity to act as a
cyclone shelter by incorporating the vernacular techniques of construction and lifestyle.
Focusing on the fu lfilment of the basic needs, vi llage Ka pateswar was redeveloped to fulfil the basic needs of the people. The Kapateswar shiv
temple, as the cent re of the village acts as the main key that connects the community t hrough their re ligion and pu re reason of existence. The
open spaces were so designed considering their fest ivals and related requirements with a direct connection to the temple at both the entrances.
Dwelling units were designed considering the factors such as t he materials that withstood the harsh storm surges and the cyclones, also
incorporating the various spaces focusing on their occupation and lifestyle requirements.
This thesis is mainly initiated to bring awareness to the most vulnerable sector of Odisha through various construction techniques and ways to
sustain in extreme weat her conditions giving them an opportunity to construct houses and make them homes, live, and feel safe under their
own roofs in the years to come.
